01 The story, in three paragraphs

Why everyone keeps coming back.

Located in the vibrant Mission District of San Francisco, J & E stands out as a cherished Chinese restaurant offering a hearty and authentic taste of home-style Cantonese comfort food. Situated at 3508, 2537 24th St, this local gem effortlessly combines generous portions with wallet-friendly prices, making it a perennial favorite among locals, medical staff from nearby San Francisco General Hospital, and visitors seeking satisfying, no-frills Chinese cuisine.

The menu at J & E is a delightful journey through classic noodle, rice, and even hamburger dishes that cater to diverse cravings. The Combination Pan Fried Noodles ($15.50) treat you to thin, crispy yellow noodles laced with savory brown sauce and topped with a colorful medley of sautéed vegetables and meats—a perfect balance of texture and flavor. For seafood enthusiasts, the Shrimp Pan Fried Noodles ($14.95) offer a succulent bite, while the Beef Pan Fried Noodles ($13.95) surprise with tender, flavorful beef that perfectly complements the noodle’s crispiness.

If you prefer rice plates, the Mongolian Chicken Over Rice ($12.50) shines with its tender chicken enveloped in a rich yet delicate sauce, served over your choice of steamed or fried rice. Similarly, the Lemon Chicken Over Rice delivers a zesty tang paired with crispy chicken, harmonizing beautifully with the fluffy rice. For those seeking generous comfort food, the Green Bean Chicken Over Rice strikes a homey note with fresh vegetables and moist, well-seasoned chicken.

What truly makes J & E stand out is its inviting atmosphere that feels both casual and bustling, a perfect spot for a quick yet fulfilling lunch or dinner. As noted by longtime patrons, the portions here are notably large, making every bite feel like great value. A friendly tip: during lunch hours, expect a short wait, especially since the restaurant draws a steady crowd from the nearby hospital and locals craving a reliable meal.

Customer reviews vividly highlight the satisfaction that comes from dining at J & E. “The beef was tender and pork BBQ fried rice was well seasoned,” shares Mariea Orivae Santiago, emphasizing the straightforward yet delicious fare. Den MT praises the “moist and tender” fried chicken coupled with a generous portion of fried rice at a fantastic price. Reflecting community loyalty, Frankie Raz affectionately notes having frequented this spot for years, even recalling it under its affectionate nickname, “Nancy’s.”

J & E balances practicality and taste remarkably well—delivering straightforward flavors that don’t cut corners but still comfort you like a home-cooked meal. Whether you’re rushing through a busy day, visiting the hospital, or simply hungry for excellent Chinese food that’s easy on the pocket, J & E offers a delicious, authentic experience that feels personal and genuine.

Decent food, big portion and reasonablely priced. However, be ready for a little wait for your food during lunch time. Fully open for lunch and dinner (until 7PM) as of July 2022. Welcome back America!

Was recommended by a few ppl and was greatly satisfied with the quality and quantity of the food I ordered. The service was helpful and to the point, which was good because I and my fiance were urgently hungry after recently having a baby and having been in the hospital for days back.

For a quick lunch, this is exactly the place I’m looking for. Straightforward and the food was delicious. The beef was tender and pork bbq fried rice was well seasoned. Also a five minute walk from the general hospital. Did I say it was so cheap?

Ordered the Fried chicken over pork bbq fried rice. The chicken is very moist and tender. The fried rice is good. The portion is huge for its price. I believe it's a little over $10 for this dish. It's near SF general hospital so it can get very busy during lunch hours.

I finally gave it a shot and tried this place out via delivery after seeing it pop up many times on Doordash. They offer a wide variety of Chinese and Chinese American dishes, such as chow mein, fried rice, soup, appetizers entrees like orange chicken, salt and pepper chicken wings/salt and pepper pork chops, rice plates, combo meals and much more to choose from. Everything was made to order which is always a plus for me since it is quality over quantity and I never mind the wait since I am a very patient person. This place is like a hole in the wall spot, where it is located in the back streets and you might not even know it is there. I highly recommend this place to anyone on a limited time, if you are willing to try something by new or if you just so happen to be in the area to check them out. I definitely will order from here again and make a visit in person one day to tryout the other delicious options they have to offer.
